This wader small and fidgeting has a short beak and pointed and very dark legs of approximately the same length as the width of the body. The adult male in breeding plumage has colorful drawings cephalic then looks white eyebrows and forehead, in contrast to the front bar, flange and black headphones feathers; the pileus is gray, but becomes red in the neck, while the collar is open and black (drawing 1 and drawing 2). The female is similar, but it's black is replaced by a darker than the tops brown and no red feathers on the neck. The adult non-breeding and the young are similar to the female in breeding plumage, but the feathers of the upper parts have pale edges, most prominent in the case of immature (Figure 3).

Singing

Pirr or emits a short, hard píorrrr. In breeding time your claim is a krruuui-krruuui quite dry with variations, which sometimes leads to a ki-ki-ki explosive.

Habitante característico de playas, arenales costeros, saladares y lagunas, el chorlitejo patinegro ha sufrido intensamente el acusado proceso de transformación acontecido en nuestras playas y humedales, lo que ha provocado su progresiva disminución. Aunque las aves españolas se muestran más bien sedentarias o, a lo sumo, dispersivas, durante el invierno las costas y lagunas de nuestro país reciben un considerable número de ejemplares procedentes de otras latitudes de Europa.

Identificación

Esta limícola de pequeño tamaño y movimientos nerviosos posee un pico corto y apuntado y patas muy oscuras de aproximadamente la misma longitud que la anchura del cuerpo. El macho adulto en plumaje nupcial presenta llamativos dibujos cefálicos, pues luce las cejas y la frente blancas, en contraste con la barra frontal, la brida y las plumas auriculares negras; el píleo es grisáceo, pero se torna rojizo en la nuca, mientras que el collar es abierto y de color negro (dibujo 1 y dibujo 2). La hembra es similar, pero en ella el negro es sustituido por un marrón más oscuro que el de las partes superiores y carece de plumas rojizas en la nuca. El adulto no reproductor y el joven son similares a la hembra en plumaje nupcial, pero las plumas de las partes superiores presentan bordes pálidos, más destacados en el caso del inmaduro (dibujo 3).

Canto

Emite un pirr o píorrrr corto y duro. En época reproductora su reclamo consiste en un krruuui-krruuui bastante seco con variaciones, que en ocasiones desemboca en un ki-ki-ki explosivo.
